Postcards from Palm Beach

yesterday, sar, jimmy and i played on palm beach. we all undeliberately skipped breakfast which ruled in our favor. we started out at Hamburger Heaven, an old fashioned diner that has been around since 1945. It doesn't look like it has changed a bit, those are the best kinds aren't they?!  the place was busy but three barstools in a row, sat, waiting for us. bar seats are sometimes the best ones to see all of the action. we all ordered the classic burger, and they came with simple, skinny french fries.

after breakfast/lunch, we drove the streets of palm beach, admiring the castles. they are castles; regal estates with statue gardens that sit across the narrow road to the atlantic ocean beach... it is paradise. when on a european road trip years back, we stopped for dinner and a city stroll in Nice, France (or maybe it was Italy?) i was suprised to love Nice, but looking back these years later, it's probably because it felt familiar- they could be sister cities, Palm Beach and Nice, pastel colored, seaside twins.

after a good beach lounge, (jimmy snoozed) we felt up for more action, and headed to the dog races! i'd never been. outside, watching the dogs, i felt almost certain someone would come up and offer a mint julep or sell a wide brimmed hat- it felt like the kentucky derby might, on a small scale of course. we studied the booklet, trying our best to understand the whole gambling process (there are so many options!) and did a test bet amongst ourselves. for the next race we silently chose #4- sour cream and onion was his name. his jersey was green and white (to match?) the bell rang, the rabbit flew by, the door flew open and out came the dogs, whizzing by our seats. sour cream and onion won!! going inside to place a 'real' bet, sar and i followed close behind jimmy- we seemed to be the ONLY women in the place, it felt like a gentlemen's club! the women of the suffrage movement would've been proud!
studying how to wager
wager window (notice the 'how to wager' signs) it's a numbers game! with a good it of luck perhaps too

all that seaside action made for good sleep! there is something about a tinge of pink sunned skin that makes cool sheets that much better, I slept 10 glorious hours last night. and now that i'm so inspired by the races yesterday, Luna (sarey's mini greyhound) and i will take our own lap around her nieghborhood lake. i brought my running shoes afterall!

enjoy your sunday!
