Always growing up, I wanted to get the Christmas tree up right after Thanksgiving, the very next day. And for two years in a row, this has come true. (Is two years in a row safe enough to call a tradition?) This is one of the many exciting things about being a grown up- you decide when the tree goes up. And the other exciting thing is for me, AMC is totally on board with getting right to it (hooray, marital wars regarding tree adorning time, sidestepped.)
Friday afternoon, we mosied Hobby Lobby and purchased molasses colored bulbs and a nutcracker who later declared his name as Ronnie. Next, we ventured to get our evergreen tree. Some people in Colorado cross-country ski into the wilderness to cut down their tree, others go to a lot and spend hours debating over which is worth adorning. AMC and I? We head over to our nearest grocery store, do a quick scan and wait for the first of us to spot "it," the "one." AMC did the spotting this year, and I fully agreed. The one in the back, the far back, the shortest one back there. Paid for by us and packed into the car with help from the teenage boy working the lot, we were his first tree sale of the season so we got him while he's still in the spirit. (Scores all around.)
All of that activity brought on a craving. A craving that once lodged into mind will not surrender. Indian curry, naan and the like. India house we went. Nothing like going from Thanksgiving American food to straight up exotic.
Getting back into the car with a full tummy was a highlight. True, fresh pine ushered us home. Up went the tree, unraveled came the lights, those shiny bulbs were a shinin' and all those Christmas decorations I forgot about were remembered. This Denver apartment is ready for the season.
Little by little, each year the decoration stash grows. And one day, in my not caring about being practical dreams, I'll have a linen closet for the bath towels that are changed out for the month, and the holiday bed comforter too. And wouldn't pillow covers be cool in the living room? A girl can dream in Christmas, yes?
